Apple Crumble with Oat Topping

Ingredients
- For the filling
- Bramley or Cox apples 1kg
- Caster sugar 75g
- Ground cinnamon 1 tsp
- Lemon juice 1 tbsp
- For the crumble topping
- Plain flour 200g
- Cold unsalted butter, cubed 100g
- Rolled oats 100g
- Light brown sugar 50g
Method
- Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan/Gas Mark 5).
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into rough chunks. Place them in a medium ovenproof dish (approx. 20cm x 20cm).
- Add the caster sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to the apples and toss gently to coat. Spread evenly in the dish.
- To make the crumble topping, put the plain flour into a large mixing bowl.
- Add the cold, cubed butter and rub it into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Don't overwork it.
- Stir in the rolled oats and light brown sugar, mixing briefly to combine.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the dish.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crisp, and the apple filling is bubbling and tender.
